What is a "save"?
A save in baseball happens when a relief pitcher enters the game and successfully keeps the opposing team from tying or taking the lead, allowing their team to hold on to a win. The pitcher must meet certain conditions, such as finishing the game or entering it with a lead that is no larger than three runs. A save is a recognition of the pitcher’s role in preserving the team’s advantage in the final moments of the game, helping secure the win without allowing the other team to score enough to catch up.
