What is a "jackal"?

The jackal is a medium-sized carnivorous mammal belonging to the Canidae family. Jackals are known for their slender bodies, long legs, and bushy tails. They have a distinctively pointed muzzle, large ears, and a keen sense of smell, sight, and hearing. Jackals are known for their adaptability and can be found in a wide range of habitats, including deserts, grasslands, savannas, and forests. Jackals are highly social animals, typically living in small groups or pairs, and they communicate with each other through vocalizations and body language. There are three species of jackals: the golden jackal (Canis aureus), the black-backed jackal (Canis mesomelas), and the side-striped jackal (Canis adustus), each with its own unique characteristics and distribution range. Jackals play an important ecological role as predators, helping to control populations of prey species and contributing to the balance of ecosystems in their respective habitats.
