an idiotic, incompetent, or useless person
What is the origin of the term "gimp" and how is it used?
Gimp entered slang in the early–mid 20th century as an insult for someone seen as useless, incompetent, or pathetic. The word comes from an older verb meaning to limp or move badly, which tied the idea of physical limitation to weakness or failure. From there, it slid into a general-purpose insult: if someone can't do something right, they're a "gimp." The meaning stuck because it was short, sharp, and easy to throw at someone who messed up or seemed ineffective. Today it's still harsh and informal, used to put someone down rather than describe them accurately, and it carries baggage because it turns the idea of disability into an insult.
