What is a "blackpoll"?
A blackpoll is a small songbird with striking black and white plumage. During the breeding season, the male's head and breast turn a rich black, contrasting with its white belly and under-tail coverts. The female has a similar pattern but with less intense black coloring. Blackpolls are known for their remarkable migratory abilities, undertaking one of the longest nonstop flights of any bird, crossing over the Atlantic Ocean from their breeding grounds in North America to their wintering areas in South America. They have a high, clear song often heard during their breeding season in the boreal forests. Blackpolls are agile foragers, primarily feeding on insects and seeds, and they can be found in various forested habitats across their range.
