What is "arachnoid"?
The arachnoid is a thin, transparent membrane that covers the brain and spinal cord, forming a protective barrier. It gets its name from its spiderweb-like appearance due to numerous fine fibers extending from its surface. The arachnoid helps regulate the flow of cerebrospinal fluid, which surrounds and nourishes the brain and spinal cord. It works in conjunction with the other meninges (dura mater and pia mater) to provide support and protection to the central nervous system.
Examples
1. Sub, underneath, the arachnoid is one of the layers of the brain hemorrhage.
2. The middle tissue layer is the arachnoid mater, and the innermost layer is the pia mater.
3. The outer layer of the meninges is the dura mater, the middle layer is the arachnoid mater, and the inner layer is the pia mater.
4. Between the arachnoid mater and the pia mater is the subarachnoid space, which contains blood vessels and a clear fluid called cerebrospinal fluid.
