What is "appliqué"?

Appliqué is a decorative technique in which pieces of fabric are cut out and sewn onto a larger piece of fabric to create a design or pattern. The smaller pieces of fabric are typically sewn onto the larger fabric with a tight zigzag stitch, called a satin stitch, which secures the edges of the smaller fabric pieces and prevents fraying. Appliqué can be done by hand or by machine and is often used in quilting, as well as on clothing, accessories, and home decor items to add texture and interest. It can be made using a wide variety of fabrics, including cotton, silk, wool, and even leather.
