What is "grog"?

Grog is a type of alcoholic drink that has a long history, particularly among sailors and naval personnel. It is typically made by diluting rum with water, often in a 4:1 ratio, although the proportions can vary depending on personal preference or the availability of ingredients. Grog may also include other ingredients such as sugar, spices, or citrus fruits, which can enhance its flavor and aroma. The origins of grog can be traced back to the 18th century, when Admiral Edward Vernon ordered the dilution of rum rations to prevent drunkenness and improve the health of his crew. The resulting drink was named after Vernon, who was known as "Old Grog" because of the grogram cloak he wore. Today, grog remains a popular drink in some parts of the world, particularly in naval traditions and historical reenactments.
