a person who obsessively follows streetwear trends and buys hyped, often expensive, fashion brands
What is the origin and meaning of the word "hypebeast"?
The slang term hypebeast refers to someone, often a young man, who is obsessed with acquiring and wearing the latest, most talked-about fashion items, especially in streetwear and sneaker culture. The word is a blend of "hype," meaning intense publicity or trend-driven excitement, and "beast," slang for someone who is exceptionally skilled or intense about something. It emerged in the early 2000s within sneakerhead communities and was popularized in 2005 when Kevin Ma, a sneaker enthusiast, launched the fashion and culture website Hypebeast. While some use the term neutrally to describe a trend-focused style enthusiast, it is often used mockingly to suggest someone is chasing clout or status through expensive, highly branded clothing rather than personal taste. Over time, it has become a staple term in discussions of street fashion and consumer culture.
