What is the origin of the term "auntie" and how is it used?
Auntie is slang from gay communities that emerged in the mid–20th century, primarily in English-speaking countries. It refers to an older gay man, often one who is flamboyant, theatrical, or nurturing within the community. The term draws on the familiar, familial role of an aunt—someone who is supportive, social, and sometimes gossipy—but applied in a gendered, ironic way to men. Historically, it could be affectionate or teasing, and in many LGBTQ+ spaces it remains a playful or respectful label, though tone and audience matter: used by outsiders in a mocking way, it could be offensive.
