What is "snow-blindness"?

Snow-blindness, also known as photokeratitis, is a painful condition caused by overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays reflected off snow and ice. This intense UV exposure can damage the cornea, which is the clear, outer layer of the eye, leading to symptoms such as pain, redness, blurred vision, tearing, and feeling that something is in the eyes. It is similar to a sunburn but affects the eyes instead of the skin. Preventing snow-blindness involves wearing UV-protective sunglasses or goggles when in snowy environments. Treatment typically includes resting the eyes, staying indoors, and using lubricating eye drops to ease discomfort. The condition usually resolves within a few days with proper care.
