A strikeout in baseball or softball happens when a batter receives three strikes during their turn at bat and is therefore out. This occurs if the batter swings and misses at the ball three times, or if the batter does not swing but the umpire calls the pitches within the strike zone. A strikeout is often seen as a way for the pitcher to get the batter out without the batter hitting the ball. It is a common and effective way for pitchers to end a batter's turn without allowing them to reach base.
