What is a "cravat"?

A cravat is a neckband or scarf that is worn around the neck, tied in a knot or bowtie at the front. It is typically made of silk or other fine fabric and was popularized in the 17th century. Originally, the cravat was used to secure the shirt collar and was worn by men as a symbol of social status and sophistication.
