What is "blackleg"?

Blackleg, also known as malignant edema or black quarter, is a bacterial disease that mainly affects cattle, sheep, and other livestock. It is caused by the bacterium Clostridium chauvoei, which is found in soil and enters the body through wounds or swallowing. Blackleg causes serious tissue damage and gas buildup in the affected area, leading to swelling, darkening of the skin, and a very bad smell. Infected animals typically show signs of limping, depression, and fever. Without quick treatment, blackleg can be deadly, often within a few days of infection. Vaccination and good management practices, such as proper wound care and sanitation, are important measures for preventing blackleg in livestock.
