What is "decreolization"?

Decreolization is the process by which a creole language gradually becomes more similar to the standard or dominant language from which it originated. This can happen as speakers of the creole adopt features of the dominant language, such as vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation, often due to social, political, or educational pressures. As a result, the creole may lose some of its distinct characteristics and become less recognizable as a separate language. Decreolization reflects changes in social attitudes and identities, with speakers sometimes seeking to align themselves more closely with the prestige or status associated with the dominant language.
