What is a "hemilaminectomy"?

A hemilaminectomy is a surgical procedure used to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerves by removing part of one side of the lamina, which is a bone structure in the spine. This surgery is typically performed to address conditions such as slipped discs or spinal stenosis that affect one side of the spine more severely. During a hemilaminectomy, the surgeon makes a cut on the affected side of the spine, removes a part of the lamina, and may also trim or remove other structures causing pressure on the spinal cord or nerves. The goal of this procedure is to relieve pain, numbness, or weakness in the legs or arms caused by nerve narrowing.
