What is a "red blood cell"?
A red blood cell (RBC) is a type of blood cell responsible for transporting oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body and carrying carbon dioxide back to the lungs to be exhaled. Red blood cells are the most common blood cells in the body and contain a protein called hemoglobin, which attaches to oxygen and gives blood its red color.
