What is "plankton"?

Plankton refers to a diverse community of microscopic organisms that inhabit bodies of water, ranging from freshwater lakes to vast oceans. It includes both plant-like organisms called phytoplankton and animal-like organisms called zooplankton. These tiny organisms play a crucial role in marine ecosystems as they serve as the foundation of the food chain. Phytoplankton are responsible for producing a significant portion of the world's oxygen through photosynthesis, while zooplankton feed on the phytoplankton and serve as a food source for many larger marine organisms. Planktonic organisms are at the mercy of ocean currents, drifting along as they are unable to actively swim against the water flow. Despite their small size, plankton collectively have a massive impact on the health and productivity of aquatic ecosystems, making them essential components of the marine environment.
