What is an "onager"?

An onager is a wild ass native to Central Asia. It is a medium-sized equid with a sandy brown coat, a black stripe down its back, and a white belly. Onagers live in deserts, grasslands, and other arid habitats, where they feed on tough vegetation and can go long periods without water. They are known for their speed and agility and can reach speeds of up to 40 miles per hour. Onagers are social animals and typically live in small herds consisting of one stallion and several mares and their offspring. They are endangered in the wild due to habitat loss, hunting, and competition with domestic livestock. However, they are bred in captivity in several countries and can be seen in zoos and wildlife parks around the world.
