What is the origin of the term "jock" and how is it used?
"Jock" is an English slang term that appeared in the United States in the early to mid-20th century, around the 1920s–1930s. It is derived from "jockstrap," the athletic protective gear, and came to refer to male student athletes. Over time, the term acquired a stereotype of being physically strong, sporty, but not academically inclined. It is used in informal speech, school or college settings, and popular culture to describe or caricature such individuals. The term is mildly derogatory when used to mock intelligence or behavior but is generally neutral and widely understood in casual contexts.
