What is a "riser"?

A riser is the vertical component of a step in a staircase, responsible for connecting one tread, which is the horizontal part where people step, to the next. It determines the height of each step, contributing to the overall rise of the staircase. Risers can be open or closed, depending on the design of the staircase, with closed risers providing a solid surface and open risers creating a more open appearance. The height of risers is important for safety and comfort, as they should be consistent and not too steep to allow for easy navigation up and down the stairs.
