What is an "at-bat"?
An at-bat in baseball or softball refers to the time when a player is up to bat and actively attempts to hit the ball. It starts when the player steps into the batter's box and ends when the player either gets a hit, is out, walks to first base, or is struck out. During an at-bat, the batter tries to make contact with the ball and either get on base or advance the runners. An at-bat is an important part of the game as it contributes to the player's overall performance, including statistics like batting average.
