inflammatory condition of the liver caused by a variety of infectious viruses or over-consumption of alcohol

What is "hepatitis"?

Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver, usually caused by viral infections, although it can also result from exposure to toxins, alcohol, or certain medications. The most common types of viral hepatitis are hepatitis A, B, and C, each caused by different viruses. Hepatitis can cause symptoms such as fatigue, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and jaundice, which is the yellowing of the skin and eyes. In some cases, hepatitis can lead to chronic liver disease, liver cirrhosis, or liver cancer. Treatment for hepatitis depends on the type and seriousness of the infection, but may include antiviral medications, rest, and supportive care. Prevention measures, such as vaccination, for hepatitis A and B, practicing good hygiene, and avoiding high-risk behaviors such as sharing needles or having unprotected sex, are important for reducing the spread of hepatitis.
