What is "hepatitis"?

Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver, usually caused by viral infections, although it can also result from exposure to toxins, alcohol, or certain medications. The most common types of viral hepatitis are hepatitis A, B, and C, each caused by different viruses. Hepatitis can cause symptoms such as fatigue, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and jaundice, which is the yellowing of the skin and eyes. Prevention measures, such as vaccination, for hepatitis A and B, practicing good hygiene, and avoiding high-risk behaviors such as sharing needles or having unprotected sex, are important for reducing the spread of hepatitis.
