What is "softball"?

Softball is a sport similar to baseball, but it is played with a larger ball and on a smaller field. The game is usually played between two teams of nine or ten players. The basic objective is for the team that is batting to hit the ball, run around a series of bases, and score runs by reaching home plate. The opposing team tries to get players out by catching the ball, throwing it to the right base, or tagging the runner. Softball can be played in various forms, including fast-pitch and slow-pitch, with different rules depending on the type.
