What is a "pit viper"?

A pit viper is a venomous snake known for the heat-sensing pits located between their nostrils and eyes, which help them detect warm-blooded prey. Pit vipers are a diverse group of snakes found in various parts of the world, including the Americas, Asia, and Africa. They have a characteristic triangular-shaped head, vertical pupils, and heat-sensitive organs that allow them to accurately locate and strike their prey, even in darkness or concealed environments.
