What is a "platelet"?

A platelet, or thrombocyte, is a small, disk-shaped blood cell that plays a crucial role in blood clotting. It circulates in the bloodstream and responds to blood vessel injury by adhering to the site and forming a plug to prevent excessive bleeding. Platelets also release various substances that facilitate the clotting process and promote the healing of damaged blood vessels.
