Tracheostomy
What is a "tracheostomy"?
A tracheostomy is a surgical procedure where a small opening, known as a stoma, is created in the neck. A tube is then inserted into this opening to provide another airway. This procedure is typically performed when a person faces difficulty breathing because of blockage or injury in the upper airway, such as after a serious illness or injury affecting the throat or windpipe. The tracheostomy tube allows air to go around the blocked or injured area, helping with breathing and allowing fluids to be removed from the lungs. It is usually a temporary measure until the underlying condition improves, allowing the person to breathe more comfortably.
Exemplu
Doctors perform tracheostomies to clear airway obstructions.
Nurses monitor tracheostomy sites for infections.
The patient underwent a tracheostomy for breathing assistance.
Tracheostomies allow for easier secretion suctioning.
