What is a "bookie"?

A bookie, short for bookmaker, is a person or organization that accepts and manages bets on various events, such as sports games, horse races, or other outcomes. The bookie sets the odds for these bets and collects wagers from bettors, taking a commission or a percentage of the total bets placed. In return, the bookie pays out winnings to bettors who successfully predicted the outcome of the event.
