What is a "genie"?

A genie is a supernatural being often depicted as a magical spirit with the power to grant wishes. The concept of the genie, also known as a djinn, originates from Middle Eastern folklore, particularly within Islamic traditions. In stories, genies are usually bound to a specific object, such as a lamp or a bottle, and can be summoned by rubbing the object. When released, the genie grants a limited number of wishes to the person who has freed them.
