What is a "rock hyrax"?
The rock hyrax, also known as the dassie or rock rabbit, is a small mammal that resembles a plump guinea pig. It has short legs, rounded ears, and a small tail. Its fur is dense and can be brown or gray in color, helping it blend in with rocky habitats where it is commonly found. Rock hyraxes are known for their unique social structure, living in large colonies that can consist of dozens of individuals. They are herbivorous, feeding on a variety of plant materials, and are well-adapted to living in rocky environments, often found perched on rocks or basking in the sun. Despite their small size, rock hyraxes are known for their loud, distinct vocalizations and are known to communicate with each other using a range of calls.
