What is a "carbuncle"?
A carbuncle is a skin infection caused by bacteria, usually Staphylococcus aureus. It typically starts as a cluster of painful, red bumps under the skin that gradually become larger and form a deep, pus-filled lump. Carbuncles often develop on hairy areas of the body, such as the back of the neck, thighs, or the lower back. They can cause fever, chills, and general feelings of illness. In some cases, the carbuncle may need to be surgically drained by a healthcare professional.
