What is "third base"?

Third base is one of the four bases on a baseball or softball field, located between second base and home plate. It is the third station that a player must reach when running the bases after hitting the ball, before attempting to reach home plate and score a run. Third base is also an important defensive position, where the third baseman plays to stop the opposing team from advancing. In addition, it is a common spot for close plays, as runners often need to make quick decisions about whether to try to advance home or stay on third base.
