a trained professional who offers support to pregnant individuals and their families before, during, and after childbirth
Who is a "doula"?
A doula is a trained professional who provides emotional and physical support to a woman before, during, and after childbirth. They offer guidance, encouragement, and comfort measures such as breathing techniques and relaxation exercises to help mothers have a positive birth experience. Doulas do not provide medical care but complement the care provided by doctors or midwives by focusing on the mother's well-being and ensuring her preferences are respected during labor and delivery. They also provide support after birth, assisting with breastfeeding, newborn care, and helping the new family adjust to life after childbirth.
