What is the origin of the term "double-gaited" and how is it used?

Double-gaited originally comes from an old English term describing horses that could move with two different gaits smoothly. By analogy, in human slang it began appearing in the late 19th–early 20th century to describe people who are attracted to both men and women—basically someone "moves" comfortably between both sexes in sexual attraction. The term is very rare and mostly historical; it's not commonly used today. Because it was coined in a time when bisexuality was stigmatized, using it can sound old-fashioned, clinical, or even slightly judgmental, so modern discussions usually prefer "bisexual."
