What is "carbon paper"?

Carbon paper is a thin sheet of paper coated with a layer of wax or ink that allows for making copies of handwritten or typed documents. When pressure is applied, such as through writing or typing on top of the carbon paper, the ink transfers onto the sheet beneath it, creating a duplicate of the original text or drawing. Carbon paper was widely used before the advent of photocopiers and digital copying methods. It is still used today for certain types of manual record-keeping or when multiple copies of a document are needed at once.
