adenoid definition and meaning

What is "adenoid"?

The adenoid, also known as the pharyngeal tonsil, is a part of the lymphatic system located in the upper throat behind the nose. It plays a role in the body's immune response by helping to filter and trap bacteria and viruses that enter the respiratory system. The adenoid is most active during childhood and gradually decreases in size as a person grows older.
