What is the origin of the term "Yid" and how is it used?

"Yid" is a term derived from the Yiddish word Yid, meaning "Jew." It has been used in English since at least the 19th century simply as an ethnic identifier. Historically, it was often used derogatorily in anti-Semitic contexts, particularly in Britain and Europe, to insult or demean Jewish people. In modern usage, it can still be offensive, but in some communities—most notably among supporters of the football club Tottenham Hotspur F.C.—it has been reclaimed as a badge of identity or solidarity. Its tone is therefore highly context-dependent: offensive when used as a slur, neutral or positive when used self-referentially within certain Jewish or sporting communities.
