What is "syphilis"?

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by a bacterium called Treponema pallidum. Syphilis progresses in stages and can cause symptoms like painless lumps, called chancres, on the genitals, mouth, or rectum during the primary stage, followed by a rash, fever, and flu-like symptoms in the secondary stage.
