What is "syphilis"?

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by a bacterium called Treponema pallidum. Syphilis progresses in stages and can cause symptoms like painless lumps, called chancres, on the genitals, mouth, or rectum during the primary stage, followed by a rash, fever, and flu-like symptoms in the secondary stage. If left untreated, syphilis can progress to more serious stages, affecting the heart, brain, and other organs, leading to severe complications.
