What is a "stickleback"?

A stickleback is a small, slender fish found in both saltwater and freshwater environments across the world. They are known for their distinctive spiny dorsal fins and armored plates along their sides. Sticklebacks have a streamlined body shape and are usually around 2 to 4 inches long. They are highly adaptable and can thrive in a variety of habitats, from rivers and lakes to coastal areas and even brackish waters. Sticklebacks feed on a diet consisting of small invertebrates, algae, and occasionally, small fish. These fish are notable for their unique reproductive behavior, with males building elaborate nests and engaging in courtship displays to attract females. Sticklebacks also exhibit interesting territorial behavior and may defend their nests fiercely. Due to their small size and ecological significance as both predators and prey, sticklebacks play a vital role in the balance of aquatic ecosystems.
