What is "silverpoint"?

Silverpoint is a drawing technique where a piece of silver or gold wire is used to create thin, detailed lines on a specially prepared surface, usually coated with gesso or another rough layer. As the silverpoint tool is drawn across the surface, it leaves a mark that gradually darkens to a warm gray or brown tone.
