a person mocked for being naive, gullible, or easily exploited
What is the origin of the term "punter" and how is it used?
"Punter" is a British slang term that emerged in the 19th–20th centuries, originally meaning a customer or client, especially someone paying for services like gambling, entertainment, or prostitution. Over time, it developed a mocking sense, describing a person regarded as naive, gullible, or easily exploited—essentially someone who can be taken advantage of for profit or amusement. It is used in informal speech, journalism, and subcultural contexts to criticize or ridicule perceived ignorance or weakness. The term is mildly to moderately derogatory, targeting vulnerability rather than moral failings.

Who is a "punter"?
A punter is a player in football who kicks the ball to the other team when his team has not advanced far enough to score. The goal of the punter is to kick the ball as far down the field as possible, so the opposing team has to start their play from a difficult position. This usually happens on the fourth attempt when the team is not able to move the ball the required distance to keep playing. The punter’s job is to send the ball far and try to avoid the other team catching it easily.
