What is "patella"?

The patella, commonly known as the kneecap, is a small, flat, triangular bone located in front of the knee joint. It plays a vital role in the mechanics of the knee. The patella acts as a protective shield for the knee joint and enhances the leverage of the quadriceps muscles, enabling efficient leg extension and providing stability during activities such as walking, running, and jumping. It glides within the patellar groove, allowing for smooth movement and reducing friction between the thigh bone (femur) and the shin bone (tibia).
