What is a "mitten"?

A mitten is a type of handwear designed to keep the hands warm during cold weather. They differ from gloves in that they have a single compartment for the fingers and thumb, rather than separate compartments for each finger. Mittens are typically made of wool, fleece, or synthetic materials and may be lined with additional layers of insulation to provide extra warmth. Some mittens have a flap or cover that can be opened to expose the fingers, allowing for greater dexterity when needed. Mittens are commonly worn for outdoor winter activities such as skiing, snowboarding, and sledding, as well as for general cold-weather protection.
