What is "gastroenteritis"?

Gastroenteritis, often called stomach flu or stomach bug, is a common condition characterized by inflammation of the stomach and intestines. It typically causes symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and sometimes fever. Gastroenteritis is usually caused by viruses but it can also be due to bacterial or parasitic infections, or even contaminated food or water. Treatment focuses on staying hydrated by drinking clear fluids, resting the digestive system by avoiding solid foods for a period of time, and in some cases, taking medications to relieve symptoms like nausea or diarrhea.
