Water-lily is a slang term that emerged in early–mid 20th-century English to describe a gay man with particularly feminine traits, appearance, or mannerisms. Like other floral metaphors such as tulip or daisy, it draws on the delicate, graceful qualities of the water-lily to highlight softness or refinement. Historically, it could be used playfully within gay communities or mockingly by outsiders.
