What is a "critical care unit"?
A critical care unit (CCU) is a specialized medical facility within a hospital designed to provide thorough treatment and monitoring for patients who are seriously ill or injured. Typically staffed by highly trained medical professionals including doctors, nurses, and respiratory therapists, CCUs have advanced medical technology such as ventilators, cardiac monitors, and life support systems. They treat patients requiring close observation and immediate care because of conditions like cardiac arrest, trauma, or severe infections. The main goal of a critical care unit is to support and help patients through severe phases of illness or injury, often needing continuous care and expertise to manage complex medical situations effectively.
