What is "Pinyin"?

Pinyin is a Romanization system used to transcribe Mandarin Chinese sounds into the Latin alphabet. Developed in the 1950s, it helps learners of Chinese read and pronounce words correctly. Pinyin includes 23 initials, which are consonant sounds, and 35 finals, which are vowel combinations or syllables.
