What is the "Macchiaioli"?

The Macchiaioli was an Italian art movement that began in the mid-19th century, based in Tuscany. Main figures of the movement included Giovanni Fattori, Telemaco Signorini, and Silvestro Lega. The Macchiaioli is known for its focus on conveying the effects of light and color in outdoor scenes. They used bold, contrasting areas of color, known as "macchie" which means "spots" in Italian, to create a sense of liveliness and movement.
