A tight end is a player in American football who stands near the offensive line, which is the group of players who block defenders. The tight end does two main jobs: blocking and catching the ball. On running plays, the tight end helps block defenders to help the running back move the ball forward. On passing plays, the tight end runs short routes and tries to catch the ball. The tight end is special because they are big and strong enough to block like a lineman but also quick enough to catch passes like a wide receiver.
